Linux is good for some tasks such as surfing the internet, checking email,
some software programs made for linux and some few

Windows programs that can be run under Wine.  TurboTax is not one of these.
It will only install on Windows 10.

Being some what a coward (and wanting value for cost) I use Linux which
costs no $$$ and offers fewer heartaches.

done a fresh installation of Windows 7 on the laptop and Windows 10 2004 on
the desktop workstation, but all of the programs

and files would have been lost.  If the system is not running, you can't
roll it back to the previous version of Windows.

I always assume that if anything can go wrong, it has a good chance of doing
it.  It's too late to close the barn door after the horse is out.

No worries Mike, just "let it rip". If it offers you a chance to save a
restore point back to whatever version you have now let it do that but as I
recall the Windows 10 upgrade automatically saves that restore point. Once
you have it installed and it boots up reliably, run that open shell file and
I think you will be well pleased.

Unrelated to the open shell interface, Windows 10 will want to download and
install new drivers for whatever hardware you have. At this point you should
have no worries since 10 has been around so long. But it could take Windows
a week of intermittent updates to get all these done.

You definitely want to install Open Shell and tweak it to the Windows start
menu style you like best.  It is much easier than using the native Windows
10 start menu.

I second Dan Glass' comment. BEFORE installing Windows 10 download to the
desktop the free add-on "Windows Classicshell" by searching those keywords.
Get the latest version you can find. I say download before because I found
it very difficult to navigate in Windows 10 to the point I had trouble even
opening a browser window. I said download to the desktop so you can actually
find it under Windows 10.

After the Windows 10 is installed then run the classic shell install file
you downloaded. Once it's installed you can set classic shell to run just
like any version back to Windows XP. I think the simplest way is to open
classic shell and select the "Start Menu" Tab. You can customize it a lot
but it's not necessary to do so. Just set it back to the version you liked
and it's business as usual.

windows 7? I love my windows 7, but it its not compatible  with the
current tax preparation software Turbo-tax.
