[AT] Another Hurricane

For those of you east of the Mississippi, or heck Colorado for that matter, what you think of as ‘forest’ bears little resemblance to 80% of what is burning. Millions of acres of scrub and dry grass that hasn’t seen rain in months. Millions of dead trees, dry, sappy pines, that have died from bark beetles. Hardly lumber grade. There ain’t no raking or managing of most of it. And yes, the majority is federal. But that really is moot. They do a lot of controlled burns in my county but there are more than enough acres to catch fire and spread easily to tens of thousands of acres. They are just trying to protect populated areas.

57% of forestry in California is federally owned (19 million acres out of 33 million)

the state of California owns 1 million acres...

     Makes for interesting responsibility...

The closest to me is the Dolan fire (Big Sur), intentionally set, which is over 117,000 acres with 40% containment. A week ago we had the worst air in the world. Now that honor has moved north, but this morning and every morning when I go outside that is the aroma, smoke. Cars are covered in ash. I've lived in California since 58, here in Morro Bay since 79 and this is by far the worst I've seen. Many landmarks are no more.

And they say that we’re only half way through the season. Anybody hear about damage/losses from the California and Oregon fires?

Looks like Louisiana stands a good chance of getting another Hurricane.

I wish every one luck. Trouble does come in threes.
