[AT] International 986 vs 1086?

Here in OK, crowd psychology will work, then you get the SOB who wants
to see you pay for what you get...  They will bid something up just to
have bragging rights as to how much they paid for it or what the made
the other guy pay.   I really hate auctions.  I have bought too much on
these internet ones lately.  I still am steamed about the loss of the
header for the 750 Massey combine I bought. Any auctioneer who sets up
an auction should know that the header should be bid after the combine
if they are split up.  If there is only one combine in the auction, then
why split up a factory header for the machine????????  I will probably
end up paying 3 times more for the header than the machine...

I would go online and check what price is being asked for locally. You can also pick up one of those tractor sale booklets and see what they’re asking. Then there’s always the collector who needs one more for his collection and will pay above cost to get it. I usually don't bid until the auctioneer is just about ready to say “going for the third time” then I bid. If somebody else jumps in, I bid one or two more times, and if they continue, I start to jump bid to within one or two hundred of what I’m willing to pay. You just have appear like you’re not going to give up, placing your next bid even before the auctioneer turns to you after the other guy bids. Bidding is an art and it depends on who else is bidding against you, what your bidding on, and whether you really want it more than anybody else.

He’d sweeten the deal by throwing something else in as a package deal to get the bidding going. I would bid and usually walked away with what I wanted plus a freebie, all for the price I was trying to get the original item for or even less.
