Does this engine have hydraulic lifters?Sounds like sticking hydraulic lifters. I had an Isuzu trooper with the 3.5 L engine and these engines were notorious for developing sticking lifters.  Noise sounds very familiar and why I am guessing that.

If I am right,It is harmless but annoying.  There are some techniques for minimizing this. I used to control it with seafoam in the engine oil right before an oil change - maybe 100 miles or so.  Then using a high-quality synthetic.  In addition I made very frequent oil changes.
