Pretty much agreed with Cecil, except, maybe, the 3-5 second rule of
thumb.  5 seconds of cranking is actually a LONG time.  Think about it:
 Che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-VRoooommm.
I'd probably cap it at 2-3 seconds myself.  On the other hand, "starts
fine" is what Mike M said, so that's probably not an extended cranking
period.  I guess the issue would be raw diesel fuel washing the oil off the
cylinder walls.  That's a concern, but I think it would take many years of
abusive starting to trash the engine.
