Pretty much agreed with Cecil, except, maybe, the 3-5 second rule of thumb. 5 seconds of cranking is actually a LONG time. Think about it: Che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-VRoooommm. I'd probably cap it at 2-3 seconds myself. On the other hand, "starts fine" is what Mike M said, so that's probably not an extended cranking period. I guess the issue would be raw diesel fuel washing the oil off the cylinder walls. That's a concern, but I think it would take many years of abusive starting to trash the engine.

SO

On Sun, Aug 18, 2019 at 6:16 PM Cecil Bearden <crbearden@copper.net> wrote:

If it fires up quickly without a lot of smoke I would not be concerned.
Many of the newer eastern european tractors will start in near zero
weather without glow plugs. My opinion is that if the tractor will
start easily with 3 to 5 seconds of cranking without a cloud of white
smoke, then the glow plugs were not needed. My D6D Cat states to use
the glow plugs when below 75deg. It does not need them at 75 at all. I
always let it warm up a little before moving also...
