Hi Spencer:
Give this a thunk... Use a strip of iron over the slot as suggested but
before welding it on, drill it in the center and tap it to hold an old
screw down grease cup or even a simple grease fitting. Then a little yearly
grease will fill the slot and keep working down into the sleeve.
