Jim, what kind of work do you do?

I haven't been to Danville in years but I don't think you'll be worried
about
traffic and you'll be very happy with housing costs compared to MA. Also,
if you like or want firearms you will be able to get, keep and use them
without
feeling like a criminal. John is correct. You'll be close enough to NC to
live
across the state line if you like. Good luck!

Charlie

Spencer,

Thanks for the insight. We drove up RT 78 from Colombia SC earlier this year
when my oldest son graduated from Army boot camp. The ride was great and the
scenery was spectacular. I never thought I could possibly get a job in that
area of the country. I am will be in Danville on Feb 12th-13th for an onsite
interview so wish me luck.

You hit on a couple major points of me considering a major move. First the
job market in New England has changed considerably in the past 20 years. If
you take Boston as a center and draw a 25 mile circle around it, this is
where all the jobs are. As a result you have southern/northern/western MA,
RI, NH, even southern Maine all heading to this 25 mile circle. The traffic
is awful. I had to leave a job in Bedford, MA as it was taking me 2-4 hours
each way for a 50 mile commute. You cannot live closer to your job as the
real estate cost is staggering. There were 2 homes built near the Bedford
job where I could have walked to work. I checked the price and found that
they were 1.4 million each and both were sold! Add to the mix the
politics/politicians in MA and lets just say they are not reflective of my
beliefs and values. My current commute is 90 miles each way but the traffic
is not too bad. We will see what pans out of this but the recruiter is very
upbeat and told me to s!
tart packing my bags. I'll keep everyone posted.

Been there many times and being from the same general area(hour and a half
away) I can tell you that this is a nice place to live. Close to some of the
best beaches in the country, and some of the best mountains in the country.
Good place for outdoor activities. The NASCAR race at Martinsville is less
than an hour away if you like NASCAR. The weather is moderate yet you have
all four seasons. Low to moderate crime, clean environment and good
infrastructure - all with low taxes; at least compared to elsewhere.

Danville shares similar problems with other towns of its same size insofar
substance abuse, crime, development, etc are concerned.

I would say the one issue you may want to research further is it is
downstream from one of the biggest coal ash spills in this country's
history. The ash spilled into the Dan river upstream here in North Carolina
in 2014. Danville sits right on that river and is the river the city gets
its drinking water from. As I understand it Danville was far enough off away
to be relatively unaffected by that spill but I would still look at it much
closer. Google "duke power Dan river coal ash spill".

John hall probably knows the area better than I do.

I have found that digging into the Twitter account of cities/companies is
always a good way to get a quick birds eye view (excuse the pun) of local
goings-on: @cityofdanville

Good luck!
