[AT] Off Topic- Danville, VA , Northern NC area

Don't know too much about Danville other than its considered a pretty
decent place, unlike my town ( I live out in the country) Durham, NC or
several others here. You'll just have to check crime rates and be your
own judge. I have heard of folks living in northern Durham driving to
Danville to work--a pretty good ride but to each his own thing. Other
than crime you won't find a much better place to live than Durham, lots
of jobs, top notch medical care, plenty of stores, restaurants. Plus you
can't tell where it ends and Raleigh and Chapel Hill begin.
My wife goes up to Danville shopping sometimes. I think there is a
fair amount of industry up there--I know Goodyear has a big plant there.
Person County, NC isn't far away. If you want to live out in the sticks,
look into Caswell and northern Person counties--it's remote but you can
be in Danville shortly. Not much in Caswell co. and the majority of
Person co. has lost its industry. Those are pretty much "bedroom"
counties unless you are a retired local or farmer. You won't be far from
Burlington, Mebane, ,Greensboro. What few folks I have met from southern
Va are southern country folks such as myself--I get along just fine with
them.

Regarding crime, taxes, public schools, healthcare--do your own research
is all I can say. Danville is big enough that it is bound to have a few
"bad areas". Likewise its big enough to probably have every major car
dealership represented, reasonable healthcare, no university that I am
aware of.

Oh, yeah--if you like hanging out at the lake, look into Smith Mountain
Lake in VA, Hyco Lake in Person Co. NC (very close to Danville), and
Mayo lake, also in Person. Ever been on the Blue Ridge Parkway? Can't
remember the road but you head on through Martinsville (I think) and
you'll pick up the parkway at Mabry's mill. Oh, a little further east
and you can be at Kerr lake. By the way, I'm not a lake fanatic--I'd
rather be getting grease under my fingernails working on old iron.

Now to get back on topic, the Deere dealer is part of a big chain, James
River. The Case-IH dealer is parts only but is a big Kubota dealer. I
think the Ford dealership has reopened, but the Massey dealer is no
more--I think.

Good Luck!!

I never thought I could possibly get a job in that area of the country. I am will be in Danville on Feb 12th-13th for an onsite interview so wish me luck.

> You hit on a couple major points of me considering a major move. First the job market in New England has changed considerably in the past 20 years. If you take Boston as a center and draw a 25 mile circle around it, this is where all the jobs are. As a result you have southern/northern/western MA, RI, NH, even southern Maine all heading to this 25 mile circle. The traffic is awful. I had to leave a job in Bedford, MA as it was taking me 2-4 hours each way for a 50 mile commute. You cannot live closer to your job as the real estate cost is staggering. There were 2 homes built near the Bedford job where I could have walked to work. I checked the price and found that they were 1.4 million each and both were sold! Add to the mix the politics/politicians in MA and lets just say they are not reflective of my beliefs and values. My current commute is 90 miles each way but the traffic is not too bad. We will see what pans out of this but the recruiter is very upbeat and told me to s!

Close to some of the best beaches in the country, and some of the best mountains in the country. Good place for outdoor activities. The NASCAR race at Martinsville is less than an hour away if you like NASCAR. The weather is moderate yet you have all four seasons. Low to moderate crime, clean environment and good infrastructure - all with low taxes; at least compared to elsewhere.

The ash spilled into the Dan river upstream here in North Carolina in 2014. Danville sits right on that river and is the river the city gets its drinking water from. As I understand it Danville was far enough off away to be relatively unaffected by that spill but I would still look at it much closer. Google "duke power Dan river coal ash spill".

Usually they are just calls that don't go anywhere but this job has progressed to the point where they want me to come down for a face to face interview. I have not been to Danville VA before but spent a lot of time in the greater Charlotte area. My question is how is the area in general? The closest I have been to this area was Mebane, NC which was a very nice town and had a good BBQ joint. Any info will be greatly appreciated.
