And then there were those that were equipped with the real McCoy--so named because they had the patented McCoy oiler that actually used the pressure of the steam in an engine to meter the oil into the cylinder.  I don't know that there were any hit 'n miss engines that had them, but it was a sought-after item during the steam era, and happens to be one of the first patents held by an African-American.
