I thought that sounded like a good suggestion but I just don't know enough 
about those old JD engines
and how they go together to know what would work.   At any rate, 
plasti-gauge is a wonderful thing
when it can be used.

Tom made a suggestion that I had not thought of in my 50+ years of
engine work.  Shim the rods with the shaft out of the block.   It is
just too simple, no wonder I never did it...   I even apprenticed under
an old old mechanic who started out in the T model days...  He never
suggested that method........
I still learn something every day from this group....
