[AT] Orchard tractors

I have my grandfather's Allis Chalmers model M orchard model with a
low offset to the right seat. The tractor has full fenders and as did the
disc he pulled to cultivate his orange groves in Anaheim, CA. The left side
of the tractor ran against the trees and the fenders protected the trees
from the tracks and discs. The seat being offset to the right protected the
operator from the trees. These types of orchard tractors would only be
needed on trees that had branches and leaves almost down to the ground. With
the event of the no till and sprinkler watered groves, the orchard model
tractor became obsolete.

I agree Cecil. However, I can't remember the exact length of those
"tobacco special"
axles. They were designed so that the rear wheels would straddle 96" but
part of that
was done with the offset spacing of the wheels. These axles were longer
but they didn't exceed 8 feet I think.
Your point about off shore manufacture and the realities of world wide
marketing are spot on.

I think those days are long gone. With the actual factories now
offshore, it would be nearly impossible or just not affordable to get a
long axle tractor over here. Unless they shipped one with the axles to
be installed at the dealer. Still, the price would be exorbitant. Such
is the case of this world economy.
