I used a large chisel that fit in the plug, then a wrench on the hex shank.

I know you've gotten a lot of responses to your problem, but I have one 
more that you may want to consider, if you haven't already got the job 
done. 

Why not go to the local hardware store and buy another plug that is male 
(has the square "peg" instead of the square "hole"). Put the "peg" end 
into the oil plug and use a pipe wrench to turn it like an adapter. 

I would imagine that a plug would cost less than an adapter, and you won't 
have to spend time and money making a tool. Wish I had thought of this 
earlier when you first asked.
