Ben,
In similar cases I've just taken everything apart, did some light sanding
with some 220 grit on both surfaces, reassembled and everything worked
fine. You can do the sanding, drive the tractor a short time, and see if
you have any problems. If it works, you're done. If it doesn't, your only
real loss would be the effort of tearing everything apart a second time to
put in the hardware, and of course the cost of the hardware itself.
