That was kind of what I was thinking. I would say measure the pockets in the shifting forks that the ball fits into and make it
match them.
I have not worked on an A/B trans but on the Cubs/Cadets the pocket that the ball fits into can get spread apart.
If they are they can be squeezed back together and tack welded to keep them from spreading again.

I don't have the answer, but when I had a similar problem on my
tractors, I just welded some material on the end and than ground it down
until it fit nicely and worked well. I know that is a crude method, but
it seems to work for me.
