Youre getting there, a good tune up including plugs and points if needed 
(check them and their gap next thing) is cheap n easy and good preventitive 
mainenance REGARDLESS if that was the specific problem....The next step is 
fuel and carburetion, she could be loading up (wet plugs), if there was a 
lot of BLACK smoke prior to it dying, meaning there could be carb problems 
such as float level and/or needle valve problems. However, if she is dying 
from fuel starvation (which may be the case if some choking can keep her 
running, does it???) it again may be a carb problem like a sticking needle 
valve and/or a gas flow restriction problem. With the gas turned on open the 
carbs lower drain cock plug and insure a steady steam of gas approx pencil 
lead thickness flows continually. Once the spark is good n strong n blue its 
time to check fuel delivery and carb problems. If you can keep her running 
with the choke partly closed, then we know theres a carb or fuel delivery 
problem. Be sure you have fresh clean water free gas and open the carb bowls 
bottom drain and check fuel flow.

Hi all--

Here's the update.  New Autolites got it to run, but she's missing and
eventually dies on her own.  The old plugs were wet.  I did manage to get
her to creep up a bit so I can get my mower out.  Small victory, but a
victory still.

I, too, thought of the points next.  That would account for the inadvertent
firing and eventual dying.

As for opinions and backsides, since I'm new to the JD world, I'll take any
and all opinions I can get!  8)
