Paul, I have a basket full of plans, or two. Everywhere I look it seems like. It is good that your 420 is running again. The 420 and similar # series that followed the letter series tractors are worth their weight then some, the 3pt hitch stuff is like gold. I dont know much about JD tractors, only ever owned a couple B s and that was 20 years ago. If I could buy them back for what I sold them for, you know how that goes. Then a farm auction down the rd a couple miles sold a 3020 and a 4020 that were bought new and used very little. I dont know what the 3020 brought but the 4020D sold for $4500
 I have kicked my self for not buying that tractor.

 While doing that, a 'crimp on' end came off a wire in my hand.  Fixed that and had spark.

Those crimp ons are handy, im guilty of useing them quite often.  Seems like if they get any oil on them their conductivity diminshes. But if they stay away from oil work so so.

sounds like you have a plan if you know bolt length. I have no idea about 
anything on this tractor, but maybe someone else does.
I took care of  Dad for 2 yrs, but not as bad as you have it
