[AT] 3 point sickle bar

Frank,

Just for starters may we ask a couple of questions?

You say it is straightforward to hook up the mowers 3-pt hitch to the
tractor ... is there a top link in this setup?

If there is not a top link and with the spring and chains you mentioned just
"laying on the ground," what happens when you raise the 3-pt? For example,
does the sickle bar come up off the ground with the outer end slightly
higher than the inside/tractor end?

If the outer end of the sickle bar were to strike an "immovable object" in
the field does there appear to be a mechanism built into the mower that
would allow the outer end of the sickle bar to rotate backwards around a
vertical axis? Is so could this spring maybe in some way be used to limit
or put a reverse torque on that backwards rotation?

I understand you to be saying there is one spring and two sections of chain?
Is the spring connected to either chain? If the chains were pulled tight in
a forward direction would they extend to the tractors back axle?

Finally, just out of curiosity, does the mower have a pitman arm or a V-belt
to drive the Head?

Dudley

Subject: [AT] 3 point sickle bar

I picked up a 3 point sickle bar mower and need some assistance on how it
connects. The 3 point connection and pto connection is straight forward.
The two things I am unsure of are a large spring and sections of chain that
I guess is used to suspend the whole assembly and a solid shaft about 3 ft
long with a 90 degree section containing a grease fitting. This shaft looks
as though it goes under the rear of the tractor and connects to some place
for what reason I do not know.

There are no id numbers or model name on the mower, it was painted green
but don't think this was the original color. As far as I can tell it
doesn't ride on any wheels. Is there a web site out there that would give
me some guidance?
