[AT] AC C loose front end

I've taken the front spindle off of my AC C.(tricycle front end)
The gears look like they just came from the machine shop,
no wear at all. The top gear(the one coming from the steering linkage
has about 1/4 to 1/2" play in it. Sliding in and out. I haven't taken
the nut off of it yet. It looks like I may be able to put a small 
washer/shim
to tighten it up and make the gears stay together.
Is this a possible solution to the flopping front-end?
