[AT] Denny's Carb Shop

I thought I could restrain myself from jumping in on this thread but Dean
and Charlie's posts this morning seem to have snapped my last strand of
restraint -

It was about six years ago that I sent a Farmall SH carb to Denny's. When I
got it back and put it on the tractor the tractor fired right up when I hit
the starter (and I have to say that was a definite improvement) but the
engine rpm was disturbingly high like say a thousand rpm at idle. I
disconnected the governor and backed the idle adjusting screw all the way
out but with no noticeable decrease in rpm.

I figured if I did any tinkering, besides playing with the idle adjusting
screw, that I would void the guarantee. I thought for several days about
what to do and finally decided I would send Denny's an E-Mail describing the
problem. I said something to the effect that I completely understood that
they couldn't get every repair completely right 100 percent of the time on
the first try. I said further that I knew Denny's would stand behind their
work (boy was I ever whistling in the dark when I wrote that) and fix the
carb if I sent it back to them. I concluded, however, by saying that a
minor adjustment to the carb was probably all that was needed and if they
would allow me to make a couple, like say turning in the Main Metering
Valve, I would keep a good record of what I did and if it fixed the problem
then all would be well with the world. If not then I would return the carb
and the record of what I had done or I would do whatever they suggested.

I thought I would get a response back like "don't touch the adjustments just
send the carb back" or "go ahead and make some adjustments first." But what
I got was a clear and stern reply, probably from their legal department. I
wish I would have kept their reply but I can't find it. It was to the
effect that Denny's is a professional shop using only the highest quality
parts and trained repair personnel and that every repair is tested and meets
Denny's high standards before it leaves their shop and that Denny's cannot
be held responsible for how the repaired part is used (or misused) in the
customers tractor ... Again while I don't remember the exact words the last
line in their replay was to the effect "If you should have need for any high
quality carburetor repair in the future please don't hesitate to contact
Denny's." Nothing, and I mean nothing, was said in their replay about what
recourse, if any, that they were offering me.

Sometimes a fading memory is a blessing ... if I were thinking clearly right
now I think my memory would be telling me that Denny's charged me in the
neighborhood of $200 for this experience and that would be a painful memory
so I am not going to think clearly about the cost. I don't like bad
mouthing a business, particularly putting it in writing. However, I have
given testimony to some good experiences so maybe this testimony is in order
as well.

Incidentally, a friend who knows a whole bunch more about carbs than I do
took a look at this carb/tractor some few weeks after this incident and with
some "really know what you're doing" adjusting to the carb got the tractor
calmed down and running like a top which it still does.

FWIW - just one guy's experience.

I called him years ago. I don't know exactly why because I don't have any
Deere stuff, but something in his ad caused me to call. He was very short
and unpleasant on the phone. He promised to send me some literature on
whatever it was he was selling. I never saw it or heard from him again and
I'm not sorry.
