It doesn't stay in the locked position-it has to be held there. It does not  
allow it to freewheel. It just makes it easier to push, but still not easy. Do 
 not tow means exactly that. It is ok to push it by had but do not tow it any 
 faster than that. You can destroy an otherwise bulletproof transaxle by 
towing.  It does take Hy-tran and it does have a spin on filter. If you don't know 
the  history of the tractor, it is a good idea to change the fluid 
completely. You  have to remove the rear cover to drain it. You will probably find some 
waxy goop  in there that needs cleaned out. It holds 7 qts of fluid.
