I think another light bulb went off over my head...  On the "Sprocket" picture, notice the nearly vertical piece of flat steel over the front 1/3rd of the sprocket?  I'll bet that is to keep the blade arms out of the track pads when the arms are turned to the rear.  I always wondered what those were there for, besides snagging on logs and stumps.
