Standing next to the machine, while it is running.. mannually 'goose' the
throttle rod to the carb.. if the governor fights and pulls back.. then it
is working. If there is no fight, hesitation.. or choppy motion.. it may be
worn. Usualy wear is flat spots on the balls, and grooves in the race...
rebuild kit is cheap.. new gov is about 250$.. depends on how much work you
want to get into R&R it.. or just swap a new one in.
Now.. Have you adjusted the idle speed set screw on the back side of the
carb? Takes a small straight screwdriver... Don't be confused.. this is not
the idle jet I'm talking about on the side of the carb facing out.. but
rather the idle speeed stop adjustment.. just mechanical linkage.. limits
the movement of the rod. My 52 8n had it adjusted at 900 rpm.. couldn't go
lower.. after adjustment.. I can get 400-600 easilly.
