[AJD] Another trivia question - Pre-Screeners??

Duane:

Thanks for doing some research. I'm beginning to think that one of these
superseded the other w/o a part number change. Intuitively I would think the
one with the round holes would be less expensive to make but I have never
seen the manufacturing operation that makes the stretched metal diamond
shape. I would assume they are stamped in flat sheets. The diamond shape
would let less large junk through but there is a fine screen over it. Maybe
in really dirty environments the fine screen had to be taken off?? I know
when we had mounted corn pickers with the big add-on screen then went over
the grills, it had to be policed quite a bit to avoid getting too full. I
would think this might have been changed for better breathing in dirty
environments. I would hate to venture a guess as to which design is better.

Haven't been able to get hold of my brother yet but will keep trying. My
hazy memory is he modified the pipe on the pre-cleaner to shorten it for
some reason. I don't recall why now. Maybe it was higher than the top of the
exhaust pipe or it blocked his view somewhat. He is much shorter than I am.
The 520 Pre-Cleaner bottom cast flange setup is quite different than the 620
version.

It sure would be nice if we could trust the illustrations in the Parts
Catalogs because they all show the round hole version for the 520 through
730. The 4010/4020 PC shows the round holes too.

Dean,
FWIW, a May 1960 version of SM2039 for the 4010 shows a prescreener with
round holes, as does an October 1963 SM2038 for the 3010. Advertising
brochure A1171-59-6 for the 730 also shows a "new prescreener attachment"
with round holes. This unit was not in 1958 or earlier brochures - only the

precleaner. The prescreener does not appear to be in the accessories
catalog AC1000 dated 10-58 but is in the 11-59 version. It will be
interesting to learn if the prescreener came on your brothers 520 or whether

he added it later.

Since the screen was available separately from the prescreener unit, I
suspect it was another low-bid deal for the screen which may have changed
over the years.
Regards,
Duane Larson
