> A neighbor has a B Allis for sale. It has electric start, wide front,

wish bone front end, and new paint. It looks good, but I an not sure if

it is the exact shape of orange that it should be. The decals are not

exact. It has new back and front tires. He started the tractor, and it

sounded alright, but there was an extra noise, It seemed like it came

from the mag or governor.

The noise you hear is quite common with Bs. Comes from two
places on those I have - either one or more of the tappets is set
too loose or the mag is noisy. You can't do much about the mag but
can check the tappets easily by removing the valve cover and using
a feeler gauge. As to the price, and I have a dozen Allis Chalmers
tractors, it is too high for this area. For that amount of money you
should be able to buy a decent D-12 which is a helluva lot more
tractor for the money than a B. Next choice would be a CA and they
go for less than $2K. FWIW, the CA and the D-12 are my favorites
in the Allis line. Both have more gears forward than the B, have
more power, better hydraulics, and in the case of the D-12, can
have live hydraulics and live PTO - depending on the Series.
