[AJD] Losing my mind getting the "B" in time

Nick,
You have not quite followed all the directions.  With the left cylinder
coming up on compression, line up the marks as discribed.  Either the dot
on the center of the flywheel will be stright down  or if using the rim
markings, will be lined up with the hashmark on the gear cover.  The slot
should then be horizonal.  Rotate the mag until the top hole fires. back
it to horizonal and install with the mag rotated forward all the way. 
Back the flywheel 1/2 turn and bring it back to the timing marks.  Then
rotate the mag back (counterclockwise) until it clicks the impluse and
tighten it down.  Your in time.
