With all due respect, Carl, most basic battery charger units
consist of simply a transformer, a rectifier, and usually a
smoothing capacitor. Regulation is handled magnetically by
the transformer itself. It will be center-tapped on the
secondary to get 6 vs 12 volts. Of course it gets more
complicated when you're talking about one of those "smart"
chargers that automatically switch themselves to a trickle
charge and so on.
