Steve,

Your correct, I meant to say rectifier, not regulator. Been working on
regulators for the last few months and the word is stuck in head.

With all due respect, Carl, most basic battery charger units
consist of simply a transformer, a rectifier, and usually a
smoothing capacitor.  Regulation is handled magnetically by
the transformer itself.  It will be center-tapped on the
secondary to get 6 vs 12 volts.  Of course it gets more
complicated when you're talking about one of those "smart"
chargers that automatically switch themselves to a trickle
charge and so on.
