Charlie the high way contractors use a gigantic rototiller for tearing up
hard surface and gravel pack, but, I find it hard to believe that normal
rototillers would not be wrecked trying to use them in soil with large rocks

We use a 6 foot tiller for working up seed beds and just hard soil is a real
challenge. Some of the older small tractors have pto gearing that is not
designed heavy enough for the high power requirements of tillers. We use the
tiller on the John Deere 3020 and the Ford 2600.

Cecil I don't think simply operating in a float on the hydraulics will
protect your tiller. Because any time the tiller hits something solid the
tine must lift the full weight of the tiller. The three point on my tractors
does not exert any down pressure other than the implement weight, hence the
tiller is in a float mode. These units are heavy.

Over the years I have wrapped all sorts of things around the rotor on my
tiller. Everything from one inch polyethylene pipe, chain, large weeds, an a
steel fence post. A tiller is great at finding large lost items 8<)
