Merle:

Ok, based on the following data from Duane's article from the University
tests:

"Tractor #2 (which I surmise is the D) provided the following results:
Maximum of 46.34 hp on low-grade gasoline, 44.85 hp on kerosene, 44.15 hp on
distillate, 42.26 hp on regular-grade gasoline, and 41.98 hp on
premium-grade gasoline.  These results are as expected since the engines
were designed for low-grade fuels."

Then I draw the conclusion that since you were pulling an "All Fuel" based
engine tractor, by using "high test", probably 87 octane gasoline, the
tractor developed slightly less HP than when it was running on Kerosene.
This is an interesting situation because the engine is designed to run
low-grade fuels. It would be interesting to compare the grades of gasoline
of that era vs the grades we currently have at the pump. I suspect that what
was called premium grade gasoline then, might be somewhat equivalent to what
we call "regular", or 87 Octane today! I think the lowest grade gasoline I
have seen at the pump recently is 85 Octane.

I have learned in this discussion to have to be careful not to use the term
gasoline generically. The regular gasoline we have today isn't equivalent to
the low grade gasoline of the 40's. Today's lowest grade gasoline at the
pumps we are familiar with is designed to be used with today's high
performance, high compression engines.

Now one could draw an erroneous conclusion here and that would be to try to
run Kerosene in an engine designed to run best on gasoline and get an even
higher HP out of it. That would be an incorrect extension of what has been
learned here.

Sstop and think about it alittle Dean. Kero has more btu's per pound.
Compression ratio has little affect on HP. If you get good vaporization for
ignition, the heavier the fuel, the more btu,s available. One of the
reasons
for jet fuel over gasoline. In the 60's we burned 90/96 avgas in the
Shooting
Star A/C because of ignition problems. When the ignition problem was solved
we
switched to JP3 for 5% power increase.
