I recently purchased a smta that was local.
the new owner put it on 12v did most everything right but put the battery in backwards...and so on the 8 mile drive home I burnt out the regulator and apparently the generator too.
I purchased the brillman alternator kit but even with my engineering schooling I'm scared to remess with the thing.....
oh and the power steering has death wabble terribly..
and I can't post pictures of it because the original owner painted.? offensive marks on the tin work..... LoL?

Eddie, I just put an alternator on my Super M and would be happy to share notes with you if it?d be helpful. Is Brillman?s kit for a 1-wire or 3-wire alternator? Really pretty straightforward even with the 3-wire.
Is the system already converted to negative ground, in addition to being 12V? Generators could work either way but the alternator will have to be negative ground. The wire from the coil to the distributor likewise has to be switched, if it wasn?t already, so the (-) terminal is feeding the distributor rather than the (+) terminal feeding the distributor as it would have been from the factory.
I?ve never dealt with the death wobble issue but know it?s common on the old tractors. I think Steiner has kits including the various bushings and bearings you might need to rebuild the front bolster assembly, and there are some good videos on YouTube if you search for ?Farmall M death wobble.?
