[AT] Curiosity killed the cat...hole in manifold ... Inspection Camera

Hey Dave,

This is the one I bought. It’s been 3-4 years since I bought this one.

https://www.harborfreight.com/digital-inspection-camera-61839.html

Worked great. A neighbor even borrowed it to verify the serial number stamped on a GTO frame. Apparently it’s in a spot that’s really difficult to see or get to.

They are now more expensive. I only paid ~$39 but that might have been after the 20% coupon. But still the two different ones were like maybe ~$49 and $79 back then. Now they are $75 and $130. So the prices have definitely gone up.

If you don’t need video capture(I.e. just use the screen in the device), this one is fine. If you do need video capture I would seriously think about upselling oneself to the one that writes the video to an SD card. Setting up the cabling and software needed for this one is not trivial in this day and time where laptops don’t have video RCA ports.

More expensive but better resolution and writes to an SD card:

Good luck!

I have a JD 420 crawler engine that was rebuilt several years ago in Alabama; sat in my brother in law’s shop for a few years as he wanted to use the crawler, and was getting around to the project someday. He passed away prematurely from pancreatic cancer at 59. The parts and pieces are now moved back home to my shop in Ohio. My concern that the annoying mud daubers prevalent in Alabama built nests in the engine. So before I start putting this thing back together, I want to look inside as much as I can to check on the status/cleanliness of the engine. A camera would be a big help.

That may be difficult due to damage to the gasket when separating the two. However, assuming it is a hole in the manifold I sure would like to see and know where it is. Just out of pure curiosity. And to make sure it is the manifold not the head itself. So… since my curiosity is so high, I am thinking about purchasing the 2.7” Color Digital Inspection camera that Harbor Freight has on sale for $59.99. Could be c considered an extravagant purchase although there have been previous times when I had the need for one. Would be really nice for looking inside engine combustion chambers before pulling heads along with a few more practical uses. And since I’m only going to live once…. But have any ATIS members had experience with this particular inspection camera? And what has been your experience with inspection camera’s in general? Would hate to buy a useless toy.
