Mark,

A big reason for their use in our area was so many left around from work behind horses. You could tailor the number of sections and depth setting to match small tractor horsepower available. They could be set to really dig or just break a crust after a hard rain. You’re sure right about their being a patience tester in a trashy field.

Most years, especially on our 'home place' this was a problem, as all the tillable acres are pretty low ground. The harrow did seem to make a difference. Later, after I left, my dad mostly went to minimum tillage and the spring-tooth pretty much became a dust-and-rust catcher. I'd be willing to wager it's still sitting around in the machinery shed or out on the ground back home, but I haven't been to the farm in a long time.

When I was a teenager we would run a section harrow behind the offset disc harrow if we were trying to break up clods, level furrows, knock the dirt off roots, etc. Just wondering what good a spring tooth harrow was/is. Yes I know it will choke up in trashy ground, and pull hard if you set the teeth way down.
