Get cells with tabs installed if possable. Much easier to solder them together.  We purchased bare cells and spot welded the leads on them using special equipment.  With the tabs you can connect with solder and wire.

Most of the time you can purchase new cells.  Make sure you get the same chemistry and size of cells.  NICAD, Nickle Metal Hydroxide etc.  If you purchase the wrong chemistry you risk a fire.  Lithium is especially dangerous. I designed battey packs in my engineering job.  The last I used was the current Lithium technology. Done right it is very safe.  Done wrong is a disaster waiting to happen.

We spent several afternoons with 1600 people in the parking waiting for the fire department to show up until we got it right. None of my designs flamed.  Ever.

We charged over 40,000 single channel recording systems utilizing Lithium batteries at a time.  After we got it right did not have even one fire.

Over the years I have replaced the actual batteries within the battery pack on a couple rechargeable tools---I bought Ni-Cad C cells online and swapped the cells themselves out. I suspect that this cannot be done with all old tools, but I would check to see if the battery pack looks like it comes apart...

I'm sure many have old tools which still work well enough....just like us! I have a set of Bosch 24v tools and the batteries are now dead but they don't make replacements.
Has anyone found a way to use these tools? I'd hate to just trash them: they are just like old tractors.
