[AT] OT - Any HVAC people on here

Mike,

No disrespect taken. I’m aware of the things that go on when you hire certain people. That’s why I do almost all of the work myself. But sometimes, you need to get things done now and there’s no way around it except paying for someone else to do it.

Carl, didn't mean any disrespect, but I have a friend in the commercial
HVAC trades, actually a boiler technician/pipefitter. A friend of his
called him to tell him his furnace was out, rather than bug him he
called a repair company. Tech came out and diagnosed it as a bad control
board. He happened to have one in his truck and installed it in 15
minutes.  Total charge $700. When my buddy got home from work he called
his friend and he was told the story. He called the supply house he
deals with and his cost for the board would have been $70. He called the
owner of the service company and chewed a$$, and told him he would
spread the word about his company. Owner dropped the bill from $700 to
$200 reasonable for the service call and part plus time. HVAC is like a
license to print money.

Probably could have jerry rigged it to work until I got a new one, but why chance burning down the house while waiting for the delivery of a new part.

>> Carl, you may really want to consider replacing that 20 year old furnace with a new one. As one who serviced a ton of old furnaces during that part of my life that I did, cracked heat exchangers, particulary in an area of cold winters, and propane, which is hotter than NG, is a real possibility. I won't even go into the efficiencies of newer equipment. Spencer covered that. Of course things today aren't built like things of old. Everything is a crapshoot really. But if you choose not to upgrade the FAU, then please buy and keep up a CO detector.

>> Mike,
>>
>> You run your air 3-4 months a year??? What part of Michigan do you live in. We live in Southeastern Michigan (near Marine City) and if we had air we would only run the it for maybe 2-3 weeks a year. That’s probably because we live near the water. (Actually, if we had air we’d probably run it a lot more. 😁). For now we just open all the windows and doors, and close the drapes on the sunny side of the house. Two ceiling fans in the family room keep us mostly comfortable through the day.
>>
>> You can go on line a get estimates for what a unit would cost for your area. You’ll see some variance in prices, but some of it depends on what manufacturer is being installed, how big the unit is, and some on what big name installer you’re hiring. Just do a search on something like .... AC installation, (county), Michigan.
>>
>> Be careful about the guy who comes in and tells you you need to replace something like the heat exchanger because it’s cracked, that’s an old ploy to beef up their sale. Have you talked to the people who put in the furnace? Maybe they’ll cut you a deal as a repeat customer.
>>
>> They’re going to run a natural gas line down our road sometime next month, so after 20+ years of propane, we’ll have to get the furnace converted back to natural gas. We’ll probably look at adding AC while it’s being done, so we’ll be in the same boat as you are now.
>>
>> Good luck!

>> Getting a price on having a 3 Ton AC unit replaced, mated to a brand new furnace that was installed last year. AC unit is 22 years old, and I'm afraid it's going to bite the dust in the middle of a heat wave. Would appreciate any advice on cost. Had one company quote me $2700, but that was more than the furnace. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Note I'm in Michigan, so I'm not going for super high efficiency, waste of money there, we only run it 3-4 months a year.
