[AT] OT Draft Exemption Exam

Timing had a lot to do with what was happening. I was in ROTC, and went to summer camp training shortly after we pulled out of Vietnam. The need for more officers changed dramatically. I was wanting to do helicopter pilot training, and the physical for it showed some minor kink in my back. They said I did not qualify as a pilot. I ask in I did not qualify as a pilot, did I qualify as a soldier. Next day I was on the street looking for a summer job, and ended up working for a taxicab company as mechanic/driver.
If it was a year or two earlier, I would have been a helicopter pilot.

In 1966 if you were married you didn't get drafted. Not much was known of Vietnam. I had been to two draft physicals and been rejected for hypertension. By the time I got my third notice I was married. The draft board l lady said I would have to go to the physical but I wouldn't get drafted. That time I passed but I never got drafted. As it turned out if I had gone in at the time I would have been in the thick of it.

I’m at the young end of Vietnam. I had a high lottery number. I did try to enlist into the Army in 72 I think at 20, but as a very active alcoholic with way too many arrests even then, they said no thank you. I wasn’t daring enough to go to the Marines. Hindsight being what it is, I wish I had. However I may have never got sober or lived as long as I have.

I received several educational deferments in the early 60's. I don't know if it was strickly due to being an engineering. Following that each year I would have another child so they quit bothering me. In retrospect I wish I had had the experience of military duty.
