Here is a collection of info that may help those new to Linux understand
how things work in the Linux world. Different terms for the same thing
helps muddy the water a bit. :-)

I might mention that I find Linux Mint is perhaps one of the most free with
information in plain talk about how to administer the system. I've played
with a lot of distributions and some are just silly cryptic in
communicating with users.

You can download and install GNU/Linux distributions without purchase. Some
companies offer paid support for their Linux distributions, but the
underlying software is still free to download and install. Microsoft
Windows usually costs between *$99.00* and *$199.00* USD for each licensed
copy.Jun 7, 2019

Is Linux free for commercial use?
The basic foundation of *Linux* is licensed under GPL (or something
similar.) This means that you are *free* to *use* it in a *commercial
application*.Dec 3, 2012

Does Ubuntu require a license?
*Ubuntu* 'main' component *licence* policy
Must include source code. The main component has a strict and
non-negotiable requirement that application software included in it must
come with full source code. Must allow modification and distribution of
modified copies under the same *licence*.

Is Linux a freeware?
The primary difference between *Linux* and many other popular contemporary
operating systems is that the *Linux* kernel and other components are free
and open-source software. *Linux* is not the only such operating system,
although it is by far the most widely used.
