When I have been mowing poison sumac, I go in and remove cloths, turn then inside out, and shower and put on fresh clothes. This usually helps keep me from getting a rash. Normally I can get mowing or pulling up/cutting bushes in about 3 hours.

If you're suggesting my problem is lack of recognition, false. I certainly don't need help in that regard. I grew up around this stuff, and 57 years later I've seen it tens of thousands of times. That's the problem. It's everywhere. I would need to run back to the house every couple hours to scrub in order to have any success with the pre-emptive method you seem to be promoting. I tend to get 2-3 rashes a year, despite hundreds or maybe thousands of "potential" exposures. So there you go. I can only differentiate a potential exposure from a real one when the rash shows up.

Learning to recognize poison ivy in its many different disguises is important. I do not know how at the moment to help with that.

Steve Offiler AT List member Mechanical Engineer <mailto:soffiler at gmail.com<mailto:soffiler at gmail.com>>; Sure, you *want* to. But what is the reality? Speaking for myself, and suspecting I'm pretty typical, the first hint that you were exposed is the rash.

James AT List Member and advocate of upgradeable tractor vocational training <jamesgpeck at hotmail.com<mailto:jamesgpeck at hotmail.com>>; You want to scrub the urushiol oil off your skin before you develop the poison ivy rash. Chuck is not talking about using mineral spirits to treat the rash.
