Hawthorn's needles are also several inches long. I have found tires with 6 or more ply rating to do well, so far leak free over perhaps a period of 6+ years. 4 ply rated tires without slime or some similar sealant have a half-life of about two months. I was not unusual to be told that 30-40 thorns had penetrated to the tube.

For smaller tires that are prone to honey locust punctures, I've had good luck with Slime.
