Thanks Farmer.   As you suggest, I don’t think I’ll be doing that experiment.
Anyways, after the last hay cutting you folks may remember that I had it with my current hay rake. I really wanted to try wheel rake but I just couldn’t find one locally that was in the right condition, size, price. So I got a John Deere side delivery rake.  There’s a retired guy about 45 minutes away from me who refurbishes hay rakes. That’s just his little hobby/sideline business. He’s super proud of his NH 256 rakes($$$$) so I have never bought from him but he posted this JD and it was priced a little better.  He replaces tires, bearings, broken tines etc and then sand blasts and paints.   I still probably paid too much ($1750 ) but it has a dolly wheel (a requirement for me for side delivery rakes) and turns with just a whisper .
If anyone knows the model, let me know.  The tag is present and has a serial number but the model section of the tag is missing its stamp.   Apparently it’s a foot or two wider than the NH256.
Anyways, I still have my three point rake in case I misjudged the quality of the refurbishment  and I have a problem with it. But if it performs well I’ll be selling my 3 model NH 57 to offset some of the money.

Here is a brief discussion you might find interesting Spencer, related to shaft chatter. This is about a baler and they are configured differently  but still... This discussion mentioned intentionally running the U-joints "90 degrees out of phase" to stop chatter. I've heard of that but never tried it. Many cannot be ran like that without cutting and welding. A lot of work just to test.  :-)

By the way all the hay is cut....
I’ve mentioned this on the list before, but one time I nearly turned a tractor over. I was pulling out a little shrub with my Farmall A. In fact I was only using a rope not a chain. I had the rope tied to the draw bar and was messing around with it getting on the shrub.  In the process I didn’t realize the slack  got looped on the rear lift rocker arm. When I pulled the load that front end came up like it was shot from a canon.   To this day I don’t know how I had the reflexes to get the clutch disengaged in time.
I was in a hurry to finish the honey-do list.   I should have slowed down 2 seconds and double checked everything.  Haste makes waste - and death....

A lesson I learned years ago with a old J.D. Model "D" was to drive up to the load you are wanting to drag . hook the chain up to the rear ( underneath ) tractor and pull in reverse .  Works safely and perfect every time .

Taking a break from finishing up the field from yesterday (and another) - a third 2 acre field to go.   Bearing operating fine.   I forgot to mention that after brushing off the old one I found the shield/seal on one side (opposite side than the one in the picture) had failed and there was a nice gap all the way around.  Tons of rust and trash in there.
New bearing didn’t help with the chattering on tight turns.

I'm on a first-name basis with the owner and one of the longtime counter men at my local NAPA.  I'm not sure how the price breaks work, but typically they give me a list price and then "my" price which is significantly lower, usually 10-20% percent.  I can't say for sure that isn't just some marketing ploy they tell everybody, but like Spencer, I like to think relationships matter.

Went at lunch to to get the bearing and it’s an exact match.  SKF brand and $43.   I said he wasn’t charging me enough because I was quoted $49 and he said “Na, just cutting you a break.  You buy all your sh at t here”
  Relationships matter...
Now just got to find a stopping point here at work so I can press it in and roll.

Don't remember if it has been brought up recently but Cecils post reminded me of this.  You have to be very careful with pillow bloic bearings when replacing the bearing itself.  Aisian bearings generally have the grease hole in a different location than our standard blocks and therefore can't normally be lubed once installed.  I have used a die grinder  in an emergency to provide a pathway but not what I like to do. Just a note FYI, there are pillow blocks that use a flat OD bearing as they are not self aligning pillow blocks.  Self align blocks are higher priced..   The bearing holder in the case of a PTO shaft is really a trunnion mount if we want to be technically accurate.

207KRR is not a pillow block insert bearing. It has a cylindrical OD where a pillow block insert has a spherical OD.

Fafnir was a biggie at one time. Installed a lot of replacement pillow blocks in fans a lifetime ago. I guess there isn’t a 6 in grunge. You can always mic the OD, ID and width in MM and look up that way. And of course Google is our friend! Is that in a pillow block? Shows as an insert bearing https://www.123bearing.com/housed-bearing-207-KRR-AH03-INA.php?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIpJTqgYjP4wIVEsZkCh1cwQLIEAQYASABEgKuivD_BwE Brad     From: AT <at-bounces at lists.antique-tractor.com> On Behalf Of Spencer Yost

Subject: Re: [AT] [External] Caution: antique tractor usage     The name/numbers are “fafnir” “207krr”.   As I understand it Fafnir(which I have never heard of of before) is now Timken and that number seemed available at several online outlets but only NAPA could get it locally.   We used to have a Bearings Distributors locally but they closed up.  We have a Graingers locally but the web site said they don’t have it.      If I need something for haymaking that is almost always right, quality, and in stock I go to Messicks but they ain’t cheap and then there is the shipping delay and costs.  Plus I haven’t lost time if the one at NAPA isn’t right.   The bearing at Messicks can still ship out tomorrow. Appears to be a 6207 shielded, both sides I would assume. No zerk. McMaster.com if someone is away from a store. I’d get sealed both sides but shielded is OK as well. Very common size in 15HP electric motors on the fan end. We had a drawer full of bearings at the wine factory. Subject: Re: [AT] [External] Caution: antique tractor usage     Spencer, I don't want to brag, but I think I have one or 2 of those in my bearing stash.   Back in the 90's when Bailey's had a lot of cheap bearings I ordered about $2000 worth of bearings to have in case something broke.  Now the problem is just finding them....

Well, the curse of old equipment struck me. The carrier bearing of the PTO shaft on the mower conditioner locked up. Amazing how a little bearing can make that kinda of a racket and pretty much stop an entire 50hp diesel tractor.  Only got about 1.5 acres mowed before this happened.       Managed to get the carrier off the mower, managed to get the rusty snap ring out, managed to press out the bearing, and found to my surprise it something the Napa carries. They’ll  have it in the local store tomorrow by lunch.   49$; and while Messicks is $45 and there would be shipping and a delay.

This model was manufactured from 1968-1972.  Judging by the paint it is original equipment, so I guess 47 to 51 years of service is acceptable :-)       Hopefully I won’t run out of sunshine.       <image001.jpg>      Spencer Yost
