[AT] [External] Caution: antique tractor usage

Yea Cecil, it’s the same kind of carrier bearing in the haybine as the NH balers. I would not be surprised if it’s not the same exact bearing. In fact, I mentioned the following on the list a few years back: With a haybine you are supposed to be able to take a fairly hard right turn with no problem. But this mower conditioner always chattered so I avoided it by disengaging the PTO and doing loop turns(time waster!!!). I always thought the chattering was from the bracket. It was always a little sloppy and loose. So I added some spacers and washers and stiffened it up a bit but that never helped much.

Wonder if it was the bearing all along? I guess I’ll find out. But I probably still won’t do it because the two universal joints on the front part of the shaft are pretty worn...

As I understand it Fafnir(which I have never heard of of before) is now Timken and that number seemed available at several online outlets but only NAPA could get it locally. We used to have a Bearings Distributors locally but they closed up. We have a Graingers locally but the web site said they don’t have it.

>> Spencer, I don't want to brag, but I think I have one or 2 of those in my bearing stash. Back in the 90's when Bailey's had a lot of cheap bearings I ordered about $2000 worth of bearings to have in case something broke. Now the problem is just finding them....

>> Well, the curse of old equipment struck me. The carrier bearing of the PTO shaft on the mower conditioner locked up. Amazing how a little bearing can make that kinda of a racket and pretty much stop an entire 50hp diesel tractor. Only got about 1.5 acres mowed before this happened.

They’ll have it in the local store tomorrow by lunch. 49$; and while Messicks is $45 and there would be shipping and a delay.
