[AT] 620 day

I have at times let the snow get packed rather than trying to keep it mostly scraped off, but I usually end up being sorry. In the photo, the area to the right of the tractor is heavily travelled on foot and in vehicles (me and my wife, and the young guy who leases the pastures and most of the barn space, and his wife and kids) and it slopes down and away. Packed snow isn’t all that bad but when it turns into ice it’s no fun at all. No way to completely stop it from happening, but I can at least try to prevent the layer of ice from being very thick so it’ll melt or get broken up more quickly.

2 weeks ago we had the same problem, except it was mud. Sticky slick red clay mud. It builds up on the tires 6 inches tall. We gravel the drive, then it is covered with mud in a week if we go to the pasture or just get off the gravel... The stuff is so slick it will stick a 4wd truck with good mud tires in only 2 inches of depth.....

Everything we drive is 4WD, too, but I really can't let ruts form. Snow changing over to rain followed by a deep freeze is a fairly common pattern here (CT/RI border). Then if another decent snow falls on top of that, I'm pretty screwed. Plus, it seems my wife is singlehandedly keeping Amazon dot com afloat, and the UPS man won't come up the drive unless it is clear.

I'm in the same boat Ralph, everyone in the family has 4WD so we just
drive through it. The only thing that is going to screw me is I have
about 2" of hard pack tire tracks and they're calling for rain on
Monday, then a re-freeze. Those ruts will be wet ice, and may require a
health dose of kitty litter and salt.
