After paying insurance on my outbuildings for 8 years, I find that it
just does not pay, unless you have a catastrophic disaster. Thank God I
didn't. When you sign those policies, you don't read the fine print,
or, the company Writes an addendum and sends it in a pile of papers. I
am insured heavily by the Farm Bureau here in OK. The policy reads that
in the event of hail and wind damage, The deductible is 10% of the
insured value of the home. They tell me that the insured value is
$180K because we still have Dad's double wide on the policy. The shed
was valued at $3000, so the deductible is $1800, and there is no
guarantee if we file a claim we won't have our rates raised next year
over a $1200 payment......
So, I am going to get 2- 40ft storage containers, put a roof between
them and park the tractors under it.
If I can get the time, I have some 2in square tubing that would be
stronger than the wood trusses. I will rebuild the trusses on the shed
that was turned over, Re-attach the walls while it is upside down, and
then turn it back over. Skid it on some poles, and set it up headed
East. Never lost one open to the East. The lumber in the trusses was
broken and splintered. Some appears to be a tension failure. The shed
had been moved, and it still had the bracing in each bay, a 2x8 on each
side of the posts from front to back, and then X braced w/ 2x8's and
screwed together in the middle. All the bracing was attached with 5/16
x 4 in screws. I left the bracing attached to reinforce the building.
The front was not open completely as a 1 ton, a baler and a trailer with
a big crankshaft grinder was parked under there. The craziest thing
was I found my hitch pin for the Baler about 6 ft away on the ground.
The Bail on the pin was hooked over the crank of the jack on the
baler. To lift off the crank you had to raise it about 16inches with
2ea 90deg bends on the crank!! That was some wind.!!
