This has been a roller coaster month. I've been getting to where I feel OK
more of the time and except for a second bout with pneumonia a while back
I'm getting my strength back overall.
Diana has been kind of through the mill as they tried to find the cause of
some falls she was having. Poked and prodded, test after test and
specialist after specialist...
We had been wanting to take a bit of a trip but had been putting it off for
several years. We decided that we needed to get at it while we still could.
We took off from here (Central Indiana) across southern Ohio, through West
Virginia and into Virginia. We didn't have time to get to Monticello the
last time we were in Virginia so that was my first destination. On the rare
trips we take we plan the first day then just let the rest of the trip
happen.
We ended up going north from there with the intention of hitting NYC but
changed our minds in mid New Jersey and went across Connecticut and Rhode
Island up to Cape Cod then Plymouth. Went from there to Lexington and
Concord. Next was up a ways into New Hampshire and lower Vermont and back
home past Buffalo and Cleveland. It made us a nice trip, 2700 trouble free
miles in 7 days.
Knowing that Diana was Factor V Leiden positive we made a lot of stops to
get out and walk etc. but I guess it wasn't enough. Near the end of the
trip she started having some swelling of her left foot and leg. When it
didn't go down any when we got home she contacted the doctor who ordered a
stat Doppler scan which showed a blood clot in that leg. She is now on
blood thinners for the next 6 months and will be getting an MRI soon to see
if she has been having any TIA's.
Folks should be informed about this Factor V Leiden thing and we have found
that many doctors don't really understand the situation as well as you
would think. Yes it only effects about 5% of the population but you are in
that 5% it can be pretty dang important. We nearly lost one of our
daughters who is also positive for it when she ended up with blood clots in
both lungs. We found out about the factor from a neighbor who had lost 3
family members to post operative blood clotting. Seems that in her family
both sides were positive... A worse situation. We found that GP's tend to
be less aware and prone to down-play it while surgeons are generally quite
aware and concerned about planning to manage it.
It's always something... (shrug).
