Another good program is Sea tools for windows put out by Seagate. It has a 
short test and a long test that will tell you if the hard drive is failing. 
An 8 year old Dell probably only involves 2 outside screws on the bottom of 
the case, and then 1 inside screw, and then the hard drive comes out.
If you have had malware,  (even though you now show as clean), the malware 
might have damaged various system files or program files.Often you can do an 
os repair with the installation disk that will solve these problems and 
still leave all your data untouched.

Crystaldiskinfo is free and will read the SMART data in the drive and show 
you if you are really having errors or not.  Run that first.

The symptoms you describe could be many things, most notably the 
processor(i.e. Heat/fan problems)
