Our neighborhood started out with a listserver.

Later some of the neighbors decided that a facebook page would be great.

No 1/2 or the neighborhood use the listserver and the other half use 
facebook.  If you want to send a message that reaches every one you have 
to do twice the work.
Personalty I look the email messages every day.  Facebook maybe once a 
month. It would be a lot more effective just to have the list-server.  
Yahoo message boards allow small attachments and you can attach small 
photos.  At that point there is little need for facebook
