Saw them in McMaster Carr. I can see them having limited use. I just changed
the pin on the steering post on dad's M that holds the steering shaft
bearing block/throttle etc. It was really worn and loose. I remember it had
a head on it but don't remember if it had a cotter pin (I replaced it with
one that does). I'm wondering was that a grooved pin?

These types of pins have been around since the early 1920's. They're still
in use and come in a whole range of designs, some with single grooves,
some multiple grooves. The grooves can also be in the middle of the pin
instead of on one end. I believe there are also types that have a cap that
doesn't go into the hole, sort of like a rivet. If you do a search of the
internet for grooved pins, you should be able to find multiple suppliers
and see all the types available.
