These types of pins have been around since the early 1920's. They're still 
in use and come in a whole range of designs, some with single grooves, 
some multiple grooves. The grooves can also be in the middle of the pin 
instead of on one end. I believe there are also types that have a cap that 
doesn't go into the hole, sort of like a rivet. If you do a search of the 
internet for grooved pins, you should be able to find multiple suppliers 
and see all the types available.
