[Farmall] Farmall H Head Installation

When all else fails, check the manual. The parts catalog says 11 studs are
5 15/16 long and 5 are 6 1/8. The long probably is fine in all locations.
It also calls out a 52823D washer for each stud starting with serial number
49570 (thus explaining different opinions on whether there are washers or
not). Since the washer is called out by part number, not dimensions, it is
probably a special. It won't be a standard hardware item, but a heavy grade
8 will probably work OK. I'd probably make sure all are the same.

All the studs are the same length, so it's not that. Also the washers
weren't in any specific pattern, like for the intake/exhaust manifold.
There were only three and they were two different thicknesses. I agree
about washers being used for creating a load bearing surface between the
nut and the head and increasing the overall clamping surface, but I would
think that would be for all of the studs, not just a couple of them. Maybe
I'm looking at a case were whoever worked on the block last didn't put all
the washers back in (???). Haven't cleaned off the nuts or push rods yet
since I'm still waiting for the head gasket to be delivered and I'm doing
it a little at a time until then, so I can't tell if the nuts have a flat
side or not. From what I remember of the disassembly, I do believe that
they don't look the same on both sides like a normal nut, sort of remember
them looking like a self locking nut, so maybe they have a flatter surface
on one side. I'll have to take a better look at them.
