Bob,

I would agree if the head was held with bolts. However there are no bolts. 
The block has studs and the head is held with nuts that thread onto the 
studs. Don't believe there is an issue with the studs sticking out past 
the nuts, in fact I think that would be preferred to ensure you have 
sufficient thread engagement.

There apparently are two different lengths to the head bolts. Perhaps 
the washers allowed longer bolts to be used where shorter bolts were 
intended.  Check Yesterday's tractor website to see what info they 
have.  Been a long time since I rebuilt my H so I don't remember 
specifics.
